The Problem

The Gutter Is Only As Good As What It Hangs From

Fascia is the board running along the ends of the rafters, and its main structural job on most homes is carrying the gutter. It is timber, it sits directly behind a channel full of wet leaves, and it is only protected by paint.

When the gutter above starts leaking, that water runs down the back of it. Paint is no defence against constant damp from behind, so the timber softens and the gutter brackets slowly lose their grip.

You end up in a loop. The sagging gutter holds more water, the extra water rots more fascia, and the sag gets worse. Neither one can be fixed properly without dealing with the other.

  • Soft or crumbling timber where the gutter brackets fix
  • Paint blistering or peeling along the fascia line
  • Gutter sagging or pulling away from the house
  • Visible gaps between the fascia and the gutter back
  • Bird or possum entry where the fascia has broken away

How We Do It

Replace The Timber Or Cap It And Forget It

Once the gutter is off we can see exactly how far the rot goes. Sometimes it is a metre either side of a leaking joint, sometimes it is the whole run, and we show you before deciding anything.

Where the timber is sound we can cap it in Colorbond, which seals the face permanently and means it never needs painting again. Where it has gone, the board gets replaced before anything is capped over it.

Then the new guttering goes back on fresh brackets fixed into solid material, which is the whole point of doing the fascia at the same time.

  • Full extent of the rot assessed with the gutter off
  • Rotted boards replaced rather than capped over
  • Sound timber capped in Colorbond so it never needs painting
  • Colour matched to the gutter and roof
  • New gutter brackets fixed into solid material

We recently bought our house, which was only five years old, and unfortunately discovered extensive roof issues that had not been built to Australian standards. After speaking with several roofers, Michael came across as the most professional and helpful. He was prompt, meticulous, and I couldn't recommend him more highly.

Asked Questions

Fascia Replacement Questions

  • It depends on how many metres need doing and whether it is a full timber replacement or a Colorbond cap over sound boards. Capping is cheaper than replacing. Because we can only see the true extent once the gutter is off, we quote a scope and tell you immediately if what we uncover changes it.

  • Capping means fixing a Colorbond cover over the existing timber, which seals it and removes the need to ever paint it again. That only works if the timber underneath is still structurally sound. Where it has rotted, the board itself has to come out and be replaced.

  • No, and anyone who says otherwise is not doing the job properly. The gutter hangs off the fascia, so it has to come off to get at it. That is why fascia and gutter work are almost always quoted together.

  • Just the affected section is often fine structurally. The consideration is appearance, because a new or capped section next to old painted timber will be obvious. We will point that out and let you decide.

  • We prime and prepare it, and most people choose to cap it in Colorbond instead so that painting never comes up again. If you would rather have painted timber, we will leave it ready for your painter.

  • We cover Melbourne's South East, from Cranbourne and Pakenham through to Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. Check our areas we serve page, or call 0478 831 069 and we will let you know either way.
